About the Geographical Societies
Geographical Societies are:
- Traditional institutions of which some are over 150 years old.
- Registered charity associations committed to the promotion of geography.
- As a rule closely knit with Departments of Geography of the universities.
- Institutions for adult education.
- spread geographical knowledge to an interested audience critically and competently;
- span a bridge from university geography to the interested lay people;
- increase awareness of the problems of spatial planning, environmental conflicts and socio-cultural compatibility of development on our earth from a global, national, regional and local perspective;
- contribute to getting to know other countries without bias and to respect and appreciate their characteristics and spatial organisation also learning about their physical environment and their culture;
- promote and form contact between "fans of geography".
- Lectures (mostly with slides) on geographical topics, held by experts on land and people;
- Excursions guided by qualified geographers into the region around the location of the Society (mostly 1-3 days) or to other countries (mostly 1-2 weeks);
- Publications about new scientific results of geographic research, about excursions, about conferences and social events of other Geographical Societies, with review on new and interesting literature;
- (in the case of some Geographical Societies) a special programme for the younger generation interested in geography (e.g. "Geographie für Alle" in Mainz or "Let's g(e)o" by the Geographical Society in Munich) which offers a broad range of topics.
