Geographical Societies

Organisations and Associations/Verbände und Gesellschaften/Organisations et associations

Brief description

The Geographical Societies in Germany are institutions rich in tradition, some of them more than 150 years old. They are registered non-profit organizations, dedicated to furthering the cause of geography and they usually co-operate closely with university geography departments. They present geographical knowledge to a broad public and reach out from academic geography to the interested lay person with lectures, field trips and publications.

Aims

The geographical societies
critically and competently present geographical knowledge to a broad public;
produce a transfer effect from academic geography to the interested lay person;
sensitize the general public to the difficulties of spatial planning, environmental conflicts and the socio-cultural compatibility of developments on our earth at a global, national, regional and local scale;
contribute to the unprejudiced, rational acquisition of knowledge about other countries as well as to respect and admiration for the natural and cultural landscapes of these countries with their specific spatial characteristics;
encourage and organise the social interaction of all those interested in geography.

Activities

Lectures on geographical themes, held by recognised experts
Field trips led by qualified experts
Publications on recent geographical research, society field trips, (academic and social) events organised by the society, with reviews of relevant new publications
Some geographical societies provide a special programme of events for young people, e.g. "Geographie für Alle" (Geography for everybody) in Mainz or "Let’s g(e)o" organised by the Munich Geographical Society
